Opening a personal fitness center can be a challenge for some but not for Miriam "MsFit" Williams, a personal trainer turned entrepreneur. She started her career with Bally Total Fitness Corporation in 2004, and then opened a personal fitness facility in Jonesboro, Ga. Williams celebrated the grand opening of her new facility on Oct. 1, 2011, elevating her personal fitness experience one more level.
Wearing a lime green shirt to match the lime green check in her Nike shoes, Williams talked about how she started with personal training. Hosting over 50 pairs of athletic shoes for her career, she has to find matching outfits to complement the shoes. "Personal training was something I fell into,” says Williams. “I was originally hired by Bally Total Fitness for a different position, and at that time, Latia Dixon, the general manager, noticed that I was the only female on staff other than herself, who actually worked out, and encouraged me to become a certified personal trainer,” says Williams. After much deliberation and slight hesitation, Williams decided to give personal training a chance. “I am glad I did. To this day, I thank Latia for taking a chance and seeing something in me that I almost didn't see in myself,” says Williams.
Williams discovered that fitness was her passion and had a vision that would help people to enhance their well being through physical and mental wellness. Williams has extended her training to another level, by answering the challenge of group exercise. She became a certified aerobics instructor in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente's Healthy Living Program in 2009. Williams currently travels to Kaiser Permanente health facilities across the Metro Atlanta area, instructing people of all ages and fitness levels and aiding them to a healthy and active life. With every class and every client, she said her passion and love continued to grow stronger for personal fitness.
After much preparation and hard work, Williams entered a new spectrum by becoming the owner of Msfit's Personal & Performance Training Center. The October 1 opening included a quick workout session followed by refreshments. As the clients were enjoying the healthy refreshments, Williams gave the nutrition facts of the fruits and chips with proper servings.
Williams has changed and inspired people all over the metro area. Yolanda Gay, state university employee and fitness student, has been working out with Williams since 2010 and has seen drastic changes in weight loss and muscle gain. While exercising with Williams, Gay has noticed that her joint and muscle movement have improved and work more efficiently. “I have an improved and higher self-esteem and confidence about my body. I also have a better understanding of how the foods I eat will affect my body as well as my mind, through training with Miriam,” says Gay.
Michael Keat, Atlanta resident and fitness student has been exercising with Williams for over a year and has noticed drastic changes in his active lifestyle. “I have noticed an increase in change in energy when working out and in my daily routine,” says Keat. “Miriam, brings a lot of energy to her workout sessions which makes it fun to lose weight."
When hearing about the opening of MsFit's facility, Gay had a few encouraging words to give her. “Miriam's energy and enthusiasm will keep her moving forward. I wish her much success in her endeavors. It's good to know a female entrepreneur. Men, women and children will benefit from her program. Congratulations,” says Gay.
“MsFit’s mission is to provide a fun, motivating and positive workout experience for people of any fitness level while allowing them to exercise on a level that is most comfortable, yet challenging, for them,” states Williams when talking about the opening of her new fitness center.
