Do you know about Lupus?

Image
Lupus Awareness Campaign I was introduced to Lupus through a high school friend when her sister was diagnosed in 2006. I had not heard of the disease before then and was unsure of what exactly it was. I did not know how many people this disease affected and how it affected the body of people of all ages, race and gender. My friend of 10 years, Musetta Reedy allowed me to ask her questions about Lupus and the impact it had on her life. Musetta Reedy, 24, lead teacher at Head Start school, is very familiar with Lupus as it has effected her family over the years. “My sister, Kalaya Reedy became very ill. She told us that she had a disease called Lupus. My family and I had never heard of it until she sat us down and explained the things that were going on in her body,” says Reedy. Using the Internet as a tool for conducting research, the Reedy family wanted to become more knowledgeable so they could become a strong support system for Kalaya as she fought against Lupus. Lupus is a ...

How does your favorite restaurant rank?

Image
Have you seen that restaurants score? Restaurant scores are posted for a reason and in some cases may determine if one proceeds to the hostess counter or walk back out the door. When you walk into a restaurant what’s the first thing you notice? Is it the fingerprints on the glass doors? Maybe the hostess that eagerly waits to greet you and take you to your table? Or is it the restaurants’ score? Some people, before telling the hostess the number in their party, look for the restaurants’ grade. For the health conscious people if it is not a score of “A” they will turn around and eat somewhere else. Is the letter grading system for restaurants really important and what does the score say about the restaurant? For many years, I never noticed the grade for restaurants until I was with a friend who happened to look at Fox Sport’s Grill in Atlantic Station and stormed out of the restaurant. Ranting on and on about not eating at restaurants that have a score less than an “A” and how disg...

Susan G. Komen vs. Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood mission is to provide health care services and educational programs, to advocate and promote research to individuals that are wanting to live a healthier life as stated on the Planned Parenthood website. It is known for their clinical services that include but not limited to; sexual health classes, breast cancer screenings, abortions and funding research for birth control. It’s primary focus is to be a provider and deliver health education to millions of young people around the world. So why would Susan G. Komen for the Cure want to pull it’s services from health facilities if they share the common goal? This question was asked immediately after the announcement was made by the foundation on Associated Press that they had decided to not to renew its partnership with the facilities. This came to a shock for some and an understanding for others. Funding for the majority of the breast cancer screenings that were held at Planned Parenthood came from Komen for the Cure...
